The Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) recently held a meeting (January) with legal representatives to discuss key updates and processing changes for the Portuguese Golden Visa programme in 2025.
One of the most significant updates concerned the confirmation of the starting date for the five-year residency period required for citizenship.
AIMA confirmed that the period begins on the initial application fee payment date. This means the time elapsed since the application is not lost, as it counts toward the five-year residency requirement for citizenship.
All stakeholders welcomed this clarification and saw it as a positive step. It also reflects the current management's commitment to addressing existing delays and inefficiencies within the system.
